Trees and development
Trees are an essential element of the built environment which require careful consideration during the planning process.

We assist clients by providing advice compliant with BS5837:2012 Trees in relation to design, demolition and construction - Recommendations from pre-site acquisition, through the planning process to site supervision during construction.

We advise clients towards the preparation of arboriculturally acceptable schemes, which usually prevents trees from being made a reason for refusal by Local Planning Authorites. Where possible we work closely with Local Authority Arboricultural Officers at the pre-application stages in order to agree a mutually acceptable scheme prior to submission. In the rare cases when schemes that we support are refused planning consent on tree grounds, we will robustly defend our position at appeal if necessary.

All plans are prepared using autoCAD software, providing clear information which can be easily transferred to other professionals within the design team.

We provide the following services in relation to the planning process:

  • Pre-purchase tree constraints advice on potential development sites
  • Tree surveys to BS 5837:2012, including a Tree Constraints Plan in order to inform layout design
  • Design reviews and assistance with site layout planning in relation to trees
  • Preparation of supporting documentation, including Arboricultural Implications Assessment; Arboricultural Method Statement; Arboricultural Impact Plan; Tree Protection Plan; Tree Planting Plan
  • Site supervision during the construction process to ensure the successful protection of retained trees
  • Representation at planning appeals from Written Representation, Informal Hearing, to Public Local Inquiry
